Your guide to using IRS.gov

November 12, 2024

Using IRS.gov efficiently can simplify your tax-related tasks. Here’s how you can make the most of the IRS online services:

Adding an IRS IP PIN

Protect your tax information by adding an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) through your IRS online account. An IP PIN is a six-digit code that helps prevent identity thieves from filing fraudulent tax returns using your Social Security number or other personal information. Here’s how to add an IP PIN:

  1. Go to IRS.gov/IPPIN and select Get an IP PIN.
  2. Sign in to the IRS. Sign in to your IRS Individual Online account to access personalized services, including the ability to add an IP PIN.
  3. Select Enroll in IP PIN from your Profile.
Go to the “Identity Protection PIN” section. Follow the steps to request your unique IP PIN.
  4. Use the IP PIN When Filing. Be sure to use your IP PIN every time you file your tax return, ensuring that only you can file using your information.

Adding an IP PIN provides an extra layer of security to your identity, protecting you from identity theft and fraud.
